When Should You Begin Your Spiritual Development Plan?
You may be at a period in your life where you are looking for something new. Perhaps you are a new Christian and you want to understand the Bible more or you are at a place in your spiritual walk where you want to go deeper.Maybe you are entering into adulthood and are curious about how you will live spiritually different than when you were a teenager or you are entering into new relationships as a spouse or parent. There really isn’t a time in life that isn’t perfect to develop spiritually and find a plan that helps you do that. We can always learn something new, so now is a great time to start.
How?
Are you part of a church or small group where you and your peers grow spiritually together? Finding a church home that feels like it is supportive of you and your spiritual needs may be first on the list of things to add to your spiritual development plan. Having a church that teaches in a way that is meaningful to you will encourage you to want to continue learning and maybe even invite your friends to come worship and learn with you.
If you are not already part of a small group through your church, you may want to join one. Small groups often meet outside of the church as a designated location. The small group setting is designed to be an intimate space where you get to know other people who want to learn about the same thing you are interested in. Lots of lifelong relationships can be made in the small group setting and as you grow together socially, you will also grow together spiritually.
Part of your spiritual development may include your church and those around you. Here are some questions to ask yourself as you build your spiritual development plan.
- Are you getting what you need at the church you have always been a part of or is it time for something new and different?
- Do you like a smaller church setting or larger?
- Does your church offer Sunday School, Bible Study, or Small Group options?
- What about the music? Do you feel moved by the worship songs?
- If you have children, is there a growing youth ministry?
- What opportunities are there for you to serve?
- Do you have a church community that fees supportive of your personal needs and can you offer your support to your church community also?
Knowing people within your church family, from the spiritual leader to the people greeting at the front door will likely promote your spiritual development goals involving church attendance, serving at church, or creating new relationships at church. Possibly after thinking about some of the questions above you might add something around your church to your spiritual development plan, because your church can play a big role in the way that you develop spiritually.
Again, at any moment in life, creating and following a spiritual development plan will have benefits for your life, but there are more urgent times where you may be searching for ways to develop spiritually because something requires your immediate attention.
Your health, both physical and mental, can be at the top of the list of things you may need to take care of and a spiritual development plan can be helpful. Having proper self-care should be something you embrace as you grow spiritually because self-care can be a spiritual act all by itself.
Self-care is defined medically by Merriam-Webster as “care for oneself”. As you think about your spirituality, maybe you want to know more about how you can care for yourself spiritually so that in return you have better health.
Maybe you are looking for a guide to wellness or you are trying to maintain the health that you have, either way, your spirituality and faith system might be the key to your healing, so including spiritual development into your daily self-care routine is necessary.
Here are a few scriptures that may provide you with peace and healing in the area of your physical and mental health and can be a part of your spiritual development plan.
Nevertheless, I will bring health and healing to it; I will heal my people and will let them enjoy abundant peace and security. – Jeremiah 33:6
Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people. – Matthew 4:23
Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires, but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. – Romans 8:5-6
Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well. – 3 John 1:2
But he replied, “The man who made me well said to me, “Pick up your mat and walk. – John 5:11
I know that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live. – Ecclesiastes 3:12

- You can find healing through faith by believing that you can be well.
- You can trust that God will provide peace and healing, knowing that that peace and healing may look different during various moments in your life.
- You can try praying because prayer works. When prayer works you will see the benefits as well as others in your life who you may be praying for or who are praying for you.
- You can set your mind on things that are Spirit-led and the outcome will be life giving.
- Jesus will always bring the good news which is beneficial for healing.
