Prayer One: Love
Love is the basis for everything in marriage. When couples understand what it means to love another, the trials and tribulations that come in their relationship will not tear them apart. The Bible gives some basic rules about love that are helpful in all areas of our lives.
Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance. – 1 Corinthians 13:4-7
As couples think about the things that they face, they would probably name the love that they have for one another as being the reason they made it through the storm. Praying and asking God to teach you how to love your spouse is necessary from the beginning stages of marriage and beyond.
In marriage, situations will come up where the love that two people have for one another may feel like it is being tested. It is in those moments that you may feel too overwhelmed to know exactly what to do, so those are the times where you simply fall back on loving your spouse. If we use God’s word as a guide for how we should love our spouses, we will remember to be kind, forgiving, honest, and so much more because that is how God loves us.
For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. – John 3:16
Prayer Two: Peace
We all need to have peace in our lives. The peace that we experience in day-to-day living should include our marriage. Sometimes when things feel broken in the world, our marriage begins to feel the same way. Peaceful living is not always easy to achieve, so we must work on finding ways to remain calm and peaceful.
Praying with your spouse about finding peace and balance in your relationship is a great place to begin since you have committed to always acting out of love for one another. When we are calm, we can think clearly and when we are able to think clearly we can communicate effectively.
I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth, you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world. – John 16:33
Prayer Three: Joy
When we think about joy, we often want to pair it with the word happiness, but joy and happiness are two different things. In marriage it is important to remember that while we may experience heartache and our happiness fades away, our joy can always remain.
The joyful shouting and weeping mingled together in a loud noise that could be heard far in the distance. – Ezra 3:13
As we think back to the early days of marriage, we remember the happiness that we felt while we were creating something new with the love of our life. As time fades away, sometimes the happiness does too. People change, feelings change, and the marriage experiences uncomfortable change, but a joy that exists deep in our hearts will sustain the marriage through the change. But let all who take refuge in you rejoice; let them sing joyful praises forever. Spread your protection over them, that all who love your name may be filled with joy. – Psalm 5:11
True joy from God allows you to continue to love even when you feel unhappy. A healthy marriage is not dependent on how much happiness you think exists in your relationship, but when two people continue to enjoy the presence of one another even while struggling to understand their circumstances.
You will still have joy in your marriage even when you don’t feel like there is anything to be joyous about because you are trusting God to provide the strength you need to continue. It will help you hang on and recognize that there is hope for the future and that happy days are on the way. With deep-seated joy, you will not lose faith in your marriage and restoration will be able to begin.
He will once again fill your mouth with laughter and your lips with shouts of joy. – Job 8:21
So you have sorrow now, but I will see you again; then you will rejoice, and no one can rob you of that joy. – John 16:22
Prayer 4: Hope
Hope in your marriage can be the one thing that will save it from failing. When two people have hope, they will not give in to the temptation to quit. Hope is one thing that everyone can have, but people tend to forget about it when then times really get tough. Hope is a free gift that you and I should receive and never let go of.
One of the definitions of “hope” in the Merriam-Webster dictionary is as the simple word “trust”. What would your marriage be like if you and your spouse trusted one another? How different would your relationship be if you trusted that the other person cares for you as much as you care for them and that everything will be okay? Hope gives you the chance to believe these things and weather the storm of marriage. When you have hope that your marriage can be restored because you trust that you and your spouse are making an effort to get things back to where they were, you can see the end of a road that may have felt too long. The biblical definition of hope is similar to the standard definition, but hope may look different and be more sustainable when it is based on God’s word and promise to you.
Having hope will give you courage. You will be protected and will rest in safety. – Job 11:18
So each generation should set its hope anew on God, not forgetting his glorious miracles and obeying his commands. – Psalm 78:7
Restoration in your marriage can feel really hard to achieve, but through prayer for love, peace, joy, and hope you can have a marriage that is fully alive and functioning the way that you and your spouse desire. Maybe you and your spouse need outside help in restoring your marriage to what it once was. Sometimes an outsider can be really helpful, so a close friend or a pastor could assist you.
However, there are times when seeking out a counselor is needed because communication errors between two people keep them from truly hearing what the other person is saying. If that is the case in your marriage, Seattle Christian Counseling has counselors equipped to meet you and your spouse right where you are. Either way, these prayers for restoration may be a great place to start your journey to healing your marriage.
