Anger Management Strategies to Help You Control Your Anger

Anger is a powerful emotion that can derail your life if you allow it. Not only can unbridled anger cloud your judgment, but it can also rob you of your sense of peace while damaging relationships, sometimes irreparably. As troublesome as it is, we should remember that anger isn’t necessarily sinful or against God’s will for our lives. Scripture reminds us, “Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger.” (Ephesians 4:26, ESV)

While anger isn’t necessarily sinful, the challenge that we all face is that anger can be difficult to manage. It’s way too easy for justifiable or righteous anger to quickly morph into the sort of anger that dishonors the Lord and others. What starts well and good can become damaging to your relational, emotional, and mental well-being. Having good anger management strategies can help you maintain a healthy balance.

Unpacking the Impact of Anger

When you feel anger rising inside of you, usually it’s because it’s been triggered by something. You may have been snubbed at work by a colleague, or your loved one left you feeling unheard. Perhaps someone took advantage of you, or you witnessed something manifestly unjust. Whatever it is, one of the emotional responses to such situations is anger, and that anger is often appropriate.

Like us if you are enjoying this content.

Anger can be overwhelming, and indulging it may seem so rewarding in the moment. Letting choice words fly at someone who cut you off in traffic can give you a sense of accomplishment or victory. I sure told them, we might say to ourselves. It is way too easy to go over the line and say too much, say something you regret, or act recklessly without regard to how those words or actions feel to other people.

It may be helpful to picture anger like a wild bronco that may have placid moments, but that can change in an instant. It’s not wise to turn your back or let your guard down around them. Uncontrolled anger can wreak havoc in your life by stirring up conflict, leading you to utter hurtful words you otherwise wouldn’t, or taking you down the path to actions you later regret.

There is a Proverb that says, “An angry person stirs up conflict, and a hot-tempered person commits many sins.” (Proverbs 29:22, NIV) If anger begins controlling you, it becomes a chronic problem. Such anger has spiritual consequences, such as derailing your walk with the Lord (James 1:19-22). Chronic anger can also increase your stress levels and negatively impact your physical health by increasing your blood pressure and the risk of heart disease.

Besides these effects of uncontrolled anger, there can be a relational cost to anger, too. Anger can create deep wounds between loved ones, and those wounds can be slow to heal. Anger can also build walls between people, especially when that anger makes them feel unsafe around you. Anger, then, can be quite devastating.

The Blessings of Better Anger Management

The above probably gives anger a bad rap by pointing out all of the negative impacts of anger. Remember, anger isn’t sinful in itself. There is something to be said for dealing with anger in a healthy and constructive way. Anger can be a tool used for growth and renewal, and it’s not just destructive.

An example of this is when you feel unheard by a loved one. The feelings of anger can be handled well or poorly. The unhealthy route would include giving them the silent treatment in response or shouting at them to make yourself heard. The healthy option would include listening to that anger and discerning what lies at the root of it, and then pursuing dialogue with your loved one.

Anger Management Strategies to Help You Control Your AngerIt is possible to express anger in healthy ways that build stronger relationships. Anger can function like a check engine light to let you know what’s happening inside you. Responding appropriately to those cues helps you communicate your needs effectively with others. This can mean fostering deeper trust and intimacy when you give gentle responses to tense situations.

Being in control of your anger and managing it well can also mean better health as you lower your stress levels, open yourself up more to the Lord’s peace, and yield more and more to the Spirit’s guidance. You’re better able to live well with yourself and with others when you can manage your emotions effectively.

Why Some Anger Management Strategies Fail

There are many benefits to managing your anger well. However, there are pitfalls along that path, and being aware of them can help you to be fruitful as you try to keep your anger in check.

Anger management strategies can fail or fall short when they are only skin deep. There is a strategy where you count slowly down from ten, and it’s a way to help you slow down before you respond rashly. This strategy does work in the moment, but it’s important to address the underlying heart issues. Anger can resurface and become harder to control.

Sticking with anger management strategies can also be difficult if you’re relying solely on willpower. For sustained and lasting change, we need the Lord’s help as well as accountability from others. The encouragement and support we get from other people can help us stay on the path, and the work of the Spirit in us can bring about true transformation in our hearts.

Anger Management Strategies to Help You Control Your Anger 1In other circumstances, anger management strategies don’t stick because we ignore the root causes of anger. Anger may be a momentary response, but many other things, such as learned patterns of behavior, often inform it. Other underlying causes of anger could be stress, unforgiveness, or unresolved trauma, which can fuel your anger and unhealthy responses to situations.

Awareness of these potential pitfalls can help you make good use of anger management strategies that help you keep anger in check. At the same time, you can address the deeper issues that could be informing your anger.

Effective Anger Management Strategies to Help You Control Anger

There are many strategies that you can use to help you manage your anger. It’s important to remember that anger management isn’t about suppressing your anger or pretending it doesn’t exist. Those are different ways of handling anger poorly. Rather, the goal is to develop a healthy relationship with your anger, to be able to understand your own anger, and channel it constructively instead of letting it take the reins.

Some effective anger management strategies include the following:

Pause, and pray: Allow yourself to count down from ten, or to leave the room briefly when you can, to allow yourself space to calm down. Stepping out of the situation can make a difference. When you feel anger rising, pause, breathe, and pray. Ask the Lord to help you stay calm and respond wisely, instead of being guided by your emotions.

Identify your triggers: Your anger works in ways that are unique to you. Reflect on the situations that tend to make your anger flare up. Recognize your own patterns of anger, like when you’re tired, hungry, stressed, or feeling vulnerable. Knowing these patterns helps you to anticipate your anger and manage it before it flares up or escalates.

Anger Management Strategies to Help You Control Your Anger 2Reframe your thoughts: Often, anger can be magnified because of our thinking patterns. If someone makes a hurtful joke or comment, it might not necessarily be intentional. Assuming it is can cause anger to flare up. It’s better to presume otherwise until you have further information. Meditating on Scripture about patience and self-control can also help to reshape your responses to triggering situations.

Use healthy outlets: Anger ought to be expressed, and there are healthy ways to do this. Using art or other forms of creative expression like writing, exercise and other physical activity, or talking things out with a trusted confidante can help you to release the tension of anger without damaging yourself or other people.

Practice forgiveness: Grudges and resentment can harbor and nurture anger. Instead, choose to forgive, releasing yourself from the burden of resentment or the need to get even.

Develop communication and problem-solving skills: There are times when you feel angry because you feel helpless or can’t express your concerns clearly. When you can plan and act to overcome challenges, and when you can work through issues amicably, it can prevent frustrations from taking over.

Seek help: Anger management therapy can help you dig deep to understand the underlying causes of your anger. You can also learn how to reframe your thoughts and implement strategies to help keep your anger under control. Help isn’t far from you; reach out to our office to connect with an anger management counselor today.
