Benefits of Effective Christian Life Coaching
Jessica Burgans
In the last few years, Christian life coaching has begun to grow in popularity. It is, in its simplest form, mentoring with goals. God intentionally instructs us to seek encouragement from those who are more mature spiritually. He wants us to be able to help each other understand how to live a fulfilling and healthy life according to His word.
But encourage one another day after day, as long as it is still called “Today,” so that none of you will be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. – Hebrews 3:13, NASB
In 1 Thessalonians chapter 5, Paul writes that we are to encourage each other. When we have someone who understands our faith and how we want to have a relationship with Jesus, it is easier to communicate our hopes and goals according to God’s word. A Christian life coach can help us see what we can do to reach our goals. The coach doesn’t make the goals but rather listens as we try to work our way toward them.
What are the benefits of Christian life coaching?
There are many benefits of effective Christian life coaching. Most of them pertain to the client and their overall wellness.
Understanding what creates joy in the client’s heart
The purpose of life coaching is to help the client find their passion and what excites them. Christian life coaching takes that a little farther and helps the client identify who they are in Christ and what God has purposed for them.
Letting go of conflict and fear
Many times, a client will have fears that hold them back from achieving their goals. There are also instances when a client has a conflict with what they want to pursue due to past problems. Christian life coaching helps bring God into the situation so that fear and conflict can be resolved.
Increasing self-image
When a client gets to know who they are through coaching they realize that they are valuable. The coach helps the client discover who they are as a child of God. This will help them see their value and what they have to offer according to God.
There is hope
Some clients believe that there is nothing more for them simply because of their education or finances. Christian life coaching takes the client to a place of understanding that they are the ones responsible for achieving their goals through the options available.
Knowing what steps to take
Once a client has discovered how they want to proceed toward their goals, they can define the steps needed to progress. The coach will not only help the client achieve their goals but also teach them how to be a Christian life coach for others.
Understanding accountability
When a client knows that the Christian life coach is there to help them attain their goals, they can use the accountability aspect to help them stay motivated.
Creates a sense of fulfillment
Effective Christian life coaching can help the client evolve from just having a wish to developing a workable plan to reach a goal. Reaching a goal creates a sense of fulfillment. Using principles from God’s Word, God’s purpose can be found in everyday actions.
Five Ways Effective Christian Life Coaching Builds Self-Esteem
During the process of Christian life coaching the client will experience an increase in their self-esteem.
- Improved outlook on changes.
- Creativity is increased.
- Relationships improve.
- Positive behavior.
- Performance is increased.
These five benefits will be evident in the way the client interacts with the coach. The client will have a different attitude about their goals when they see that they can reach them.
What Christian Life Coaching is Not
Christian life coaching is not something that will help problematic people. Christian life coaching is so much more than helping increase performance. An effective Christian life coach will be able to help a person attain performance that will lead to promotion. By focusing on strengths according to God’s Word, a Christian life coach will help the client achieve the purpose God has instilled in them.Christian life coaching is not teaching. The clients are not being taught how to achieve their goals. They are being encouraged to teach themselves how to achieve their goals. The client provides the answers to the questions they ask. The Christian life coach simply guides them through the process.
Christian life coaching is not therapy. Therapy is where you look to the past to get through a present issue. Christian life coaching is forward-orientated. Meaning that the process is designed to look to the future from the present.
Who can benefit from a Christian life coach?
The better question is who doesn’t benefit from Christian life coaching? Everyone who wants to be intentional about reaching their God-given purpose can benefit from it. God would not have insisted that people help each other learn if it wasn’t important to their well-being. (Proverbs 27:17 and Colossians 3:16)
Each client deserves to know who they are in Christ. An effective Christian life coach will bring out the questions they want to ask and answer to find the client’s identity. Effective Christian life coaching can assist the client in developing the gift that God has given them.
What are the foundations of Christian life coaching?
There are times when the concepts of life coaching can be mingled with mentoring, discipling, or consulting. But the difference is that Christian life coaching is based on working from the inside out. In this process, the coach will guide the client to search within themselves to find their passions and giftings. This will also lead to an inner revelation of who God is in their life (Proverbs 20:5)
It is through Biblical foundations that Christian life coaches will guide their clients toward making the decisions that will lead them to live a purpose-driven life. The coach will help the client cultivate new visions and plans through using prayer and the guidance of the Holy Spirit. When the coach is grounded in God’s Word, the client will see the Holy Spirit leading the process.
The Best Life Coach Ever
The best life coach we could ever desire is God Himself. Throughout the Bible, we see how God has designed us to encourage each other in His love. We read about all the stories and instructions on how we are to walk according to His plan. When we follow these precepts we can learn how to make wise decisions. As we seek His kingdom first, we will find that we begin to know who we are as His children.
But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. – Matthew 6:33, NASB
